According to the Oregon Public Health Division’s Injury & Violence Prevention Plan 2016-2020, everyone is affected by injury, regardless of age, sex, race, or ethnicity. In fact, injury is the leading cause of death among Oregonians 1 to 44 years of age. In 2013, 2,595 Oregonians died as a result of injury.
As a leading cause of death for younger age groups, injury has a substantial impact on the population of the state. Injury-related hospitalizations in Oregon resulted in an estimated total cost of $1.1 billion. Unintentional injuries accounted for 90 percent of the total cost.
